Ringtones are one of the best ways you can express yourself in this modern age. They were invented so people could tell the difference between phones, but we’ve certainly come a long way. If you’re on the leading edge enough that you have an iPhone, well then you obviously need to download some really special iPhone ringtones to truly show it off.

iPhone ringtones work slightly differently from other downloadable ringtones. Instead of downloading them via a browser on your actual phone, the most common way is to use iTunes software for downloading the iPhone ringtones. This is basically a way of creating “custom ringtones”.

Each iPhone ringtone costs $0.99 from the iTunes store. That’s only if however, you’ve already purchased the song you want a ringtone of. If you don’t own the song, then you’re going to have to purchase and download that as well. A lot of people weren’t pleased when this was announced, as it essentially means that if you want a ringtone, it’s almost like buying a song twice. Considering that iTunes was built on a model of cheap content - that people will buy instead of pirating, it’s surprised it’s not cheaper to download iPone ringtones.

Basically, it means that downloading iPhone ringtones costs you about $2.00 (or $1.98 if you’re watching all your pennies). There are ways to get iPhone ringtones for cheaper or even free however! That are many different options, including software, and hardware hacks for the phone.

In iTunes 7.4, people realized that by simple converting existing files with special software, renaming those files with a different extension, and them dumping them in the right directory, they could synch these ringtones to their phone. It’s basically a way of downloading free iPhone ringtones. The next software upgrade broke the “hack”, but not surprisingly, people found other ways around it.

Now there are a bunch of different options, and several sites and pieces of software that allow you to download ringtones for the iPhone. Weather you’re purchasing them from iTunes, or using other resources (free and not) to get your ringtones, actually downloading iphone ringtones is actually very easy. After all, it is THE iPHONE, and it is an Apple product. What more can you expect?
