Cell phones needed to have sounds for incoming calls, alarms and other features, this is how the oldest probably the first ring tones came alive, monophonic ring tones. These types of ring tones were very simple both in how they were composed and how they sounded.
Monophonic ring tones played an important part in cell phone evolution. The first cell phones had monophonic ring tones and many cell phones after them used this technology but if it wasn’t for monophonic ring tones we could have never enjoyed ring tones as they are today.
Monophonic ring tones were formed mostly by different types of beeping sounds, by different I mean some of them were higher some stronger or longer and shorter; and by organizing these different beeping sounds anybody could accomplish some king of melody or tune which could eventually become a ring tone if desired.
Old cell phones had an application which allowed the cell phone user to compose their own melodies. The user would press the different buttons of their cell phone and each button would produce a different beeping sound which would also have an icon, much like a music chord, which could be viewed in the cell phone’s screen and organized into melodies
Monophonic ring tones consumed very little memory space that is why this kind of ring tone technology was the best for old cell phones, since they did not have lots of memory themselves. Monophonic ring tones where simple yet fascinating to most of us at the time, we must not forget that.
Cell phone users could and still can choose from many different monophonic ring tones. There are Christmas themes, rock and roll themes, classic music themes, TV series themes and many others. Almost every cell phone in the world can play a monophonic ring tone, but if your cell phone still does play them you are a little behind in technology.
After a few new technologies were developed organizing these beeping sounds into melodies became a little easier and although monophonic ring tones today may seem very antiquated, they still played a major role in ring tone evolution.
